Acupuncture Basics
Author: Colette McKie
Acupuncture evolved over 3,000 years and began what can be called “scientific” medicine. It was a departure from blaming a supernatural cause for disease. The Chinese defined a detailed system using the inductive and deductive method to promote a return to health. Just as we have a blood, lymph and a nerve system, they perceived a system which is comprised of channels throughout our body called meridians filled with energy called chi (pronounced chee) that flows in the meridians. Scientists are developing technology with the ability to detect and measure the flow of this energy.

The meridian system functions in a similar way to our Chesapeake Bay waterway system. When the water (chi) flows smoothly all is well. Blockages or flooding hinder smooth movement. The disruptions cause boats to stop moving and in our body lack of movement is communicated to us as pain.

It is theorized that pain is caused by lack of oxygen due to a lack of blood flow. Pain is communication from our body pleading for oxygen. Acupuncture needles used in specific points clear blockages or stop flooding. Our miraculous body gets the message (or point!) and blood with the oxygen again flows to the area. Pain can then be relieved. Of course rubbing an area or massage also brings blood to the area. The acupuncture needles however are used at points known to promote energetic flow. Acupuncture is a medical treatment that is considered to have an effect at a deeper level than massage and the results can last longer.

Acupuncture practitioners are usually state licensed. To renew their license they are required to complete Continuing Education units. Some acupuncturists are certified and others have a Master Degree in Acupuncture. Only in the last year or so have schools in the US started to offer Doctorate programs in acupuncture. Some Medical Doctors are trained in acupuncture and among those some have more training in acupuncture than others. A Medical Doctor might have less acupuncture training than a certified or Master Degree licensed practitioner.

To many practitioners communication with each patient is important. To find the right person ask people you respect for referrals. Ask them why they like that person or what they have heard about the practitioner. Give each practitioner you are considering a call and chat with them. The person you feel most comfortable with over the phone will probably be the best practitioner for you. The cost per hourly treatment can range from $65.00 to $90.00, and the first session is usually more. Some practitioners work directly with insurance companies. Most will give you receipts so you can be reimbursed. Every person/family has a its own policy within a large carrier such as Blue Cross. Contact your insurance carrier to find whether your policy includes acupuncture and if there are stipulations or restrictions.

Acupuncture can help a person get relief from most kinds of physical pain and emotional distress. Body pains that can be helped include neck, shoulder, back, hip, knee, or feet pain. The affects of acupuncture can bring relief from headaches/migraines, arthritis, insomnia, fatigue, IBS, depression, Parkinson’s, digestive issues, anxiety/stress, asthma, skin issues, stroke recovery, chemotherapy nausea or fatigue, high blood pressure. Future articles will give more information about Acupuncture concepts and examples of patient experiences
