Elderly Fitness Tips

Exercise can help you to feel young and will keep you fit. Exercise gets your blood moving, keeps your skin warm, helps your skin to rejuvenate itself and keeps your mind sharp possibly warding off dementia. Having an active lifestyle keeps you fit.

If you are elderly (over 60) and lead a life of sitting most of the time you are going to feel old and your mind may get depressed faster than if you led an active lifestyle. Feel younger by not thinking about your age and what you think you should be doing at this age and start being active and involved in your community. You will be surprised how young you will feel again.

Exercise can help you to feel young and will keep you fit. Exercise gets your blood moving, keeps your skin warm, helps your skin to rejuvenate itself and keeps your mind sharp possibly warding off dementia. Having an active lifestyle keeps you fit. Staying active also helps to keep you flexible so that movement comes easier. Exercise keeps the blood flowing through your organs, which carries oxygen to your organs and helps to carry away the waste. Exercise is not the only way to stay fit. You also need to eat a proper diet and drink plenty of water. Water helps to remove toxins from your body and aids in digestion.

There are lots of exercise that individuals over age 60 can do comfortably such as biking, golfing, walking, swimming, dancing, tai chi, and Pilates. Exercise in groups for added pleasure and social contact. Many senior centers off fitness classes where you can have fun exercising with others your age.

When you exercise your body releases chemicals, which the brain produces and helps to keep your head clear so you can cope with stressful situations better. Elderly individuals can do some kind of exercise 2 to 3 times each week even if it is just gardening or walking.

Continuous training is when you participate in activities where most of the energy you use is supplied by aerobic exercises such as a 30 to 60 minute walk. You maintain a continuous flow of activity to keep your heart rate pumped for a sustained time period. Fartlek training is a form of training that has you doing interspersing short bursts of intense and faster workouts during the time you are doing continuous physical activity. You will be deliberately intensifying your workout, which causes a temporary build-up of lactic acid. If you are running you will all of a sudden put on a burst of speed until your heart rate reaches a certain pre-determined level and then you will slow down to a jog again. Bally Total Fitness

Join others for a game of golf, go square dancing, or tend a garden with friends. Form a bowling team, walk a dog or push your grandchild on a swing or in a stroller. Play catch with a neighbor child or take a leisurely evening stroll with your partner or best friend.

Elderly individuals need proper nutrition in order to stay active, as food is the fuel our bodies need for energy. Elderly are often at risk for under nutrition due to physical, cognitive or functional decline. Those who do succumb to under nutrition are at risk for depression, memory loss, and debility. Poor nutrition causes health issues such as cardiac disease and diabetes. Sometimes it is difficult for the elderly to have transportation to and from stores. Sometimes it is the economic hardship of the times that prevents the elderly from being able to make the food choices or to receive adequate nutritional intake.

So just how do the elderly overcome the problems that stand in the way of exercising and getting adequate nutrition? Communities can offer so much in the way of transportation for the elderly and nutrition assistance programs such as “Meals on Wheels”, a service where hot meals are brought to those who are unable to get out of their homes due to disability or illness. The elderly can join senior programs in their communities that offer social support, transportation services and companionship.
