- An Overview of Metabolism
You may have heard of metabolism in regards to weight loss. Those who want to lose weight need to burn off more calories than they take in. This ability to burn off more calories than is consumed depends on how much food (calories) the individual consumes and how active the metabolism is at breaking down and burning off those calories. When the metabolism is healthy it can burn off calories at a better rate than when those 3 ingredients we mentioned earlier are not at the best levels for a healthy metabolism (nutrition, hydration, physical activity).
- Caffeine and the Metabolism Connection to Heart Attacks
According to one study the risk to the group who metabolizes caffeine slowly is greater for younger individuals who drink 4 cups or more of coffee a day. One study also showed that individuals who were "couch potatoes" and those with other risk factors for heart disease were also at greater risk of having a heart attack after drinking caffeine-containing beverages.
It also seems that according to the Costa Rica study, those who drink only one cup of coffee (light drinkers) increase their risk more than those who are coffee junkies. Also, if an individual already has 3 or more heart disease risk factors they more than double their risk of having a heart attack.
- How To Boost Your Metabolism
When you keep your body well hydrated the body can function properly including staying at an optimum energy level for proper metabolism. When you lack proper hydration you body has to work harder, which takes up more energy, leaving less for metabolism. Make sure you drink more than eight-8 oz glasses of water each day. It is especially important to drink water before, during, and after exercise.
- The Elderly and Metabolism
There are a couple of reasons why, but the truth is that metabolism doesn't have to slow down with age. There are factors that contribute to the slow down of metabolism. Factors that can be controlled. People who are getting older usually are less active. Less activity means loss of muscle mass. If we do not change of pattern of eating, then we burn less calories (less muscle mass) and still consume the same amount of calories as before when we were more active. More calories and less burning of calories means that we end of storing more fat. The body also doesn't need to grow anymore as we head into our older years and the human growth hormone is no longer needed so it is produced in fewer quantities. The human growth hormone is responsible for building and for maintaining the lean muscle mass as the hormone diminishes so does our muscle mass.
- Your infant's metabolism and Weight Gain In First Week Of Life
It is not certain why the first week of life plays such a critical role in metabolic programming or weight patterning. Animal studies have found that when animals were overfed in the first few days of life it led to long-term obesity, possibly due to programming of the developing brain of the animal or in the way the endocrine system was affected by the overfeeding, since there is a connection between eating and hormones.
- The Metabolic Syndrome
If you have low metabolism, diets won't help you to lose weight. People, who diet, especially fad dieting, lower their caloric intake to below 1200 calories a day. This makes your body think that it is starving and it will go into survival mode. It will conserve fat so that it will survive these lean days. If you continue to eat fewer calories than 1200 per day, the body will break down muscle tissue. This breaking down of muscle tissue releases nitrogen, which then your body will need to wash away using water from cells. This causes you to urinate more, which may result in a few pounds of weight loss. You may feel unwell though and you will feel dehydrated. This will make you feel tired. This causes you to get even less exercise than before. You will start to feel joint pain and stiffness.
- The Process Of Metabolism
Several hormones of the endocrine system that help to control the rate and also the direction of the process of metabolism help the process of metabolism. One of the hormones is called thyroxine. It is produced by the thyroid gland. It helps to determine how fast or how slow the chemical reactions that make up metabolism occur. Hormones are given off by the pancreas that helps to determine which metabolic activity is used at a particular time (anabolic or catabolic). An example would be when we eat our food anabolic activity happens because the process of eating increases the level of glucose in the body (an important fuel) this glucose release triggers insulin to be produced in the pancreas, which then in turn signals the body's cells to increase their anabolic activities.
- The Slowing Metabolism Age and Decrease Muscle Cycle
There are many things that can affect our rate of metabolism. The biggest single factor in our metabolism is our muscle tissue. Meal frequency also has an affect on our rate of metabolism and so do our activity level, food choices, hydration level, genetics, hormone production and function and our stress level.
Our metabolism slows down when we lose muscle due to lack of exercise, when our body cannibalizes muscle in order to satisfy its need for energy because we have been dieting or skipping meals, and when our activity levels fall short of where they should be.
- Using Your Metabolism To Lose Weight
If you can remember what things slow down your metabolism and what things speed it up, then you can have a better chance of using metabolism to help you lose weight. Staying healthy by eating the proper nutrition, in the correct proportions, staying well hydrated, getting adequate amounts of sleep each night and making sure that you are getting enough physical activity each and every day are all ways to help your body maintain a healthy metabolism. When you metabolism is healthy it will be able to burn off calories. The way to lose weight is to burn off more calories than you take in. This doesn’t mean to go on some crash diet with low caloric intake because your body needs at least 1200 calories a day or it will think that it is starving and go on survival mode by slowing down the metabolic rate and then you will not be able to have the healthy metabolic rate that is needed to lose weight.
- What Can Go Wrong With Our Metabolism
Type 1 diabetes mellitus is when the pancreas does not produce or secrete enough insulin to meet the body's needs. Symptoms of this disease are: excessive urination and thirst, weight loss despite extreme hunger. Insulin injections are needed to control the blood sugar levels in order to reduce the risk of developing problems associated with diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes: In this disease, the body can't respond normally to the insulin in the body. The symptoms are similar to type 1 diabetes. Usually children and teens that have type 2 diabetes are overweight, which may play a role in why the body decreases its response to insulin. Diet is the normal treatment for this disease along with exercise, and oral medication. Sometimes insulin injections are necessary. It is necessary to control blood sugar levels to reduce the risk of developing long-term health problems that can occur.
