The body goes through enormous changes during pregnancy including chemical, mechanical and physical changes. The increasing size and weight of the abdomen places a strain on the spin, pelvis and on your entire body. Between 50 and 80% of all pregnant women suffer from lower back pain during pregnancy. Osteopathic treatment can give relief from this lower back pain of pregnancy. Osteopathic treatment can aid with excessive ligament laxity, the increased weight gain as well as the altered weight distribution and how that changes the posture and center of gravity.

Osteopathic treatment is gentle and natural and non-invasive so it is safe for pregnant women to be given this treatment. In fact the treatment can improve the balance of the pelvis and minimize soft tissue irritation and discomfort, that will allow for a better pregnancy environment which will lead to an easier labor and easier transition for the baby into this world.

Not only does the increasing girth of the abdomen cause lower back and leg pain, but also the increased breast weight and size can cause upper back, neck pain.

The Osteopathic can give not only a gentle treatment to relieve the pains and discomforts of pregnancy but can also give advice about how to improve posture and how to use the pregnant body correctly so as to minimize aches and pains during the rest of the pregnancy.

Back Pain Relief

The process of being born is often a traumatic one in which a huge amount of stress can be placed on the small body. There is a large amount of contractile pressure being placed on the baby's body during the birth process. Common reasons why babies and young children are seen by osteopathy are infant colic, constant crying, reflux or regurgitation of stomach contents, misshapen head, sleep difficulties, constipation, feeding problems and for a normal post partum check up. Young children and older children may also benefit from osteopathy for Glue ear, and musculoskeletal effects of asthma, for poor concentration, sinusitis, and for growing pains or sports injuries. Osteopathy can also ease other side effects of pregnancy such as heartburn, indigestion, constipation, and also sciatic pain. Moms have also noted that after their osteopathic treatments they notice fewer bouts of morning sickness.

The entire list of pregnancy complaints that osteopathic treatment can help relieve include lower back and leg pain, neck and shoulder pain, indigestion and discomfort around the thorax area, wrist pain, any issues with the coccyx after delivery, and relaxation of soft tissue and supporting muscles and ligaments.

Each pregnancy is treated individually for each pregnancy will present with a different combination of discomforts at different times throughout the pregnancy.

The baby and mom should make an appointment to be seen by the osteopathic for a structural examination, advice and for repeated check ups as necessary for treatment of any lingering issues or for birth trauma.

If you are caring for young children while pregnant it is especially important that you care for your back when you are lifting or carrying a child or when shopping. Carry a small child on one hip and then switch to the other hip. Use back stretching exercises to give you comfort and support. When standing for any length of time, practice keeping your bottom tucked in order to reduce the curvature of the lower part of your spine. When you are sitting place a cushion to support your lower back and do not sit with your legs crossed. Avoid making sudden twisting movements. Lie supported in bed with pillow - place one under the pregnant abdomen, and one beneath your knees to keep them bent. Your osteopathic can also advice you about relieving pain during labor, so don't forget to ask!
