Respite Care When A Child Is Involved

Respite care is not just for when the caregiver is caring for an elderly individual. Some families find themselves caring for a sick or disabled child and are also in need of respite services. In this case respite care is short-term care that the family needs in order for the caregiver to have a break from the daily routine and the stresses involved in caring for a child with special needs. This respite care typically takes place in the child's home. But it may also take place in out of home settings as well. Respite care is often a vital resource that allows the family to keep the child at home when the child suffers from a chronic illness or is disabled.

If the child is able to they may attend respite care that is done on an after-school basis, in a day care situation so the child can interact with peers and adults outside of the immediate family.

As the child ages some of the respite care is given in order to assist the child in building skills that will be needed for independent living. This respite care may take place in a group home, or another organized program in a supported environment.

Whenever a parent leaves a child in the care of another in order for the respite to bring about peace and relaxation the parent needs to be comfortable with the respite care workers and to trust that the child will receive quality care in the parent's absence.

There are many groups available for parents to contact regarding respite care when a child or teen is involved. There are state and local governmental agencies, state and local disability and support groups, groups based on disability needs, and respite care services offered by the community they reside in.
