Respite Care When A Child Is Involved
Not all families will have the same needs
so respite care for families with children who need care have the
respite services geared to their particular needs by identifying
the respite need and matching it up with available services or if
none exist, the service may need to be developed.
Respite care is not just for when the caregiver is caring for an
elderly individual. Some families find themselves caring for a sick
or disabled child and are also in need of respite services. In this
case respite care is short-term care that the family needs in order
for the caregiver to have a break from the daily routine and the
stresses involved in caring for a child with special needs. This
respite care typically takes place in the child's home. But it may
also take place in out of home settings as well. Respite care is
often a vital resource that allows the family to keep the child at
home when the child suffers from a chronic illness or is
disabled.

Children grow and change and so does the needs of respite care
when a child is involved. As the child gets older the respite needs
will change and the respite care plan will need to be modified to
meet any new needs. Respite services are geared towards the entire
family because each family member will be affected by the child's
needs in different ways and will require different respite
relief.
If the child is able to they may attend respite care that is
done on an after-school basis, in a day care situation so the child
can interact with peers and adults outside of the immediate
family.
Transportation may be provided if the individual being cared for will be cared for in a facility other than the individual's home.
If using a professional respite care facility you will want to conduct an interview to access the environment, the staff, the planned activities, programs, transportation, meals and the training provided for the staff. You can access the information about these things by asking questions such as:
What are the service hours, fees and provided services?

As the child ages some of the respite care is given in order to
assist the child in building skills that will be needed for
independent living. This respite care may take place in a group
home, or another organized program in a supported environment.
Whenever a parent leaves a child in the care of another in order
for the respite to bring about peace and relaxation the parent
needs to be comfortable with the respite care workers and to trust
that the child will receive quality care in the parent's
absence.
There are many groups available for parents to contact regarding
respite care when a child or teen is involved. There are state and
local governmental agencies, state and local disability and support
groups, groups based on disability needs, and respite care services
offered by the community they reside in.
