Respite care is the relief or substitute care given to aid the
caregiver who gives assistance to an elderly family member, an ill
family member or a frail member that needs assistance in daily care
activities. The caregiver is usually unpaid, typically a family
member and is usually in need of a break from care giving duties.
There are different types of respite care that the caregiver may
call upon including but not limited to adult day care, informal or
volunteer respite care, and in-home respite care.
Respite care can occur on the weekends, in the evenings, during
the weekday, or just about anytime that a caregiver needs a break
from the duties they provide. The respite services may be required
for a single day or for multiple days so the caregiver can go on a
vacation. The respite care may take place in a nursing home, day
care, home health service, or short-term institutional care.
Adult day care respite care is programs that are designed to
provide care or companionship to disabled or frail individuals who
need assistance or just supervision during the day. These programs
give a break to those who normally care for these individuals so
they can go to work, go about personal business, or just so they
can relax without the care giving responsibilities that they
normally handle.
Informal and volunteer respite care is when another family
member, or a friend, neighbor, or church volunteer offers to stay
with the cared for individual while the person who normally does
the care is given some time off. Many communities offer a on-going
program of "friendly visitor programs" that are run by a local
church or agency on aging that provide basic respite services to
those in the community who are in need of them.
Making Sure Your Respite Care is Quality Care
There are many ways that family members can assess respite care services to be sure that their loved one will receive quality care during the time that the respite care services are being used. Use the following tips to help you determine if the respite service you are evaluating is a quality service.
The first thing you should do when checking out a respite service that is provided by an organization or organized program is to check to see if they are licensed by the state and if those caregivers who will be utilized are qualified to do the skills that are required by the loved one to receive the care.
The credentials can be verified during an initial interview by asking about the following:
How many service hours the family can use?
Is the person doing the care responsible for more than one "patient or client" at a time?

In-home respite care is usually for the elderly impaired
individual who just needs companionship, or homemaker services
(housekeeping, meal preparation, or shopping services), personal
care such as help with bathing, getting dressed, help with
exercising, or going to the bathroom and lastly skilled care
services such as a visiting nurse who administers medications or
takes blood glucose or blood pressure readings.
Typically with agency or organized services federal or state
programs help pay the cost of the respite care. Long term care
insurance policies may also offer coverage for some forms of
respite care. Most paid for respite care will depend on the agency
doing the respite care, the location the care is being given in,
and the situation of the individual receiving the respite care.
