Obesity is becoming common in kids today, so it is important to encourage them to participate in children's sports. Sports can be more than a way to get exercise, they can build self-esteem, help the child to make friends and encourage sportsmanship and teamwork, all good values for any child to have.

Staying safe while playing sports can be accomplished if parents, coaches and kids learn some basic rules about preventing children's sports injuries.

Rules for preventing children's sports injuries:

In football the most common injuries are bruises, sprains, strains, pulled muscles, and soft tissue tears such as is seen with broken bones, internal injuries, and ligament pulls, as well as damage in internal organs, back injuries, sunburn and knee and ankle injuries. Key to preventing football injuries is to have kids wear safety gear such as helmet, mouth guard, shoulder pads, athletic supporters for boys, chest/rib pads, forearm and elbow and thigh pads, shin guards and properly fitting shoes. To avoid sunburn have the kids wear sunscreen. Drinking plenty of water before and during football practices and games helps kids to stay hydrated which helps to prevent injuries too.

Basketball injuries that kids often suffer are sprains, strains, bruising, scrapes and cuts, fractures, dental injuries, knee and ankle injuries, shinbone and shoulder injuries and dislocations. To avoid these basketball injuries always have your child wear eye protection, elbow and kneepads, mouth guard, and boys should wear athletic supporters. All kids should wear properly fitting shoes, hat and sunscreen. It is vital to drink plenty of water before during and after play.

Soccer injuries that children can have while playing are cuts and bruises, scrapes, headaches and also sunburn. To prevent sunburn use proper sun lotion. Always insist that your child wear shin guards, cleats and boys should wear athletic supporters. Proper warm-ups and good training techniques can also prevent injuries.

Common softball/baseball injuries are sustained from sliding or being hit with a ball. These incidents in the game can lead to soft tissue strains, impact injuries such as fractures and of course sunburn is always an issue when playing outside. The best way to prevent some of these softball/baseball injuries is to always wear a batting helmet when batting, wear shin guards, elbow guards, cleats, hat, and use breakaway bases. Boys should wear athletic supporters. Mouth guards should also be worn to protect teeth. Proper conditioning of all players and good warm-up exercises can contribute to lowering the risk of injuries.

Gymnastics can also present the risk of injuries if proper conditioning and warm-ups are not enforced. Common gymnastics injuries include sprains and strains.

Children who participate in track and field events can sustain scrapes from falling on track or field, strains and also sprains. To prevent injuries it is important to have properly fitting shoes, and boys should wear athletic supporters. It is essential to be well hydrated so have kids drink water before during and after meets. Proper conditioning and coaching can also help to prevent injuries.

Coverage of Peyton Manning’s injury shows media, money muddle sports news
