A sport that is becoming popular among the young is martial arts. There are special risks for injury in this sport, especially if the training is not done properly. Warming up is especially critical for those participating in the martial arts. Most of the common martial arts injuries can be prevented with proper warm-up.
Some of the most common injuries associated with the martial arts are cuts and bruises, sprains, jamming of fingers and toes, and also head injuries.

Usually cuts and bruises occur when someone is going too hard or when someone is not paying close enough attention to what they are doing. Not paying attention can cause, "slip ups" which cause avoidable injuries.
Sprains occur mostly in the ankles, elbows and also the toes because of the running and kicking involved in martial arts. Uneven or overly soft flooring can contribute to these sprain injuries. Sprains can also occur due to improper weight distribution when the individual is kicking. Use proper stance and maintain proper balance to avoid sprain injuries.
To avoid elbow sprains keep a slight bend in the joint when you are punching, and also be sure to go at a slow pace so that your partner does not injure you accidentally. Always tap out when you are grappling and you feel pain, instead of trying to muscle out of a lock. Avoiding injury is critical to staying fit and staying "in the game".
All kids should wear properly fitting shoes, hat and sunscreen. It is vital to drink plenty of water before during and after play.

Fingers and toes can become jammed when throwing a kick or punching improperly. You can also hit a bag or pad improperly and jam your finger or toe yourself. You must keep a tight fist when throwing an open hand technique that requires the palm or knuckles in order to avoid injury. You can also keep the fingers tightly together when the palm is open to avoid jamming the fingers. Proper form is essential when preventing injury to the fingers or toes.
Head injuries can happen in competition as well as when training. The best way to prevent concussion is to wear a high quality and properly fitting helmet. It is also important to wear a properly fitting mouth guard because the helmet alone is not protection enough especially in competitions or events of higher levels.
